Coffee: A Brief Exploration of its Surprising Health Benefits

March 14, 2024 by Kristin Ryals

Coffee is an incredibly popular drink; most people use it for the energy it provides and to get a little pep in their step. This is why a lot of people start their day with a piping hot coffee. However, in addition to helping you to feel more energised, drinking coffee has a number of other purported benefits too. Let’s take a look.

Reduced Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

There has been some research which may suggest that regular coffee consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Several studies have been undertaken, and it is thought that the decrease could be as low as 6% when compared to non-coffee drinkers. This has been attributed to the fact that drinking coffee can help to preserve the pancreas’ beta cells which produce insulin and help to regulate blood sugar.

Supports Brain & Heart Health

There has been research which suggests that drinking coffee may actually help to protect the brain from degenerative conditions like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. There hasn’t been a numerical value attributed to the reduction in risk; further research would be needed. In addition to this, there have also been links between drinking coffee and a decreased risk of depression.

However, coffee consumption may exacerbate the symptoms of anxiety. The energy provided by the caffeine in coffee can increase your heart rate, which in anxiety sufferers can be unpleasant and even mimic the feelings of a panic attack. Drinking coffee regularly is also thought to reduce the risk of heart disease, heart failure, and stroke.

Weight Management

Caffeine can act as an appetite suppressant which does mean that drinking more coffee may act as a weight management tool. It can help to curb the urge to overeat. As mentioned above, caffeine also helps to provide energy which can make it easier to ensure that coffee drinkers are fulfilling their physical activity requirements too.

Helps to Keep the Liver Healthy

The results from a few different studies suggest that drinking coffee daily has been linked to a reduced risk of chronic liver disease. Depending on how many cups of coffee a day you drink, the reduction dramatically increases. It has also been linked with lessening liver scarring too.

Longer Life

All of the factors mentioned above come together to suggest that regular coffee consumption could boost your health. However, before a definitive conclusion is reached, more research would be needed. It couldn’t be easier to include more coffee in your diet either, thanks to coffee-making machines like the ones from OnBuy. You can have your coffee made to your tastes with ease.

The Bottom Line

Coffee is an incredibly popular drink, and as such, it is also a popular research subject. It has been discovered to have a number of health benefits, such as the ones listed above. However, there may be several personal circumstances and caveats which could affect the results. Further research may also be needed to verify the validity of some of the results mentioned above.
